Sports bar. Gastropub. Steakhouse. Entertainment venue. Hendo’s Barrel House, with its open floor plan, striking floor-to-ceiling windows, welcoming bar, and connecting MMA training facility, doesn’t fall neatly into a single category. It’s a local hangout with a generous side of MMA excitement. Arrive on a Friday evening, and there will be families out to dinner, friends clustered at the bar, live music playing, and possibly a UFC watch party taking place upstairs.

Owner Dan “Hendo” Henderson grew up in nearby Downy and opened Dan Henderson’s Athletic Fitness Center in Temecula upon retiring from his career as a two-division MMA champion and Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler. In the spring of 2025, he opened Hendo’s Barrel House, which shares a wall with his gym. Dressing up the space are larger-than-life-size portraits of Mr. Henderson from his competing days, championship belts on display behind the host stand, a gift shop selling logo hats and tees, and more than one American flag. On fight nights, guests with VIP tickets can sip cocktails, have dinner, and watch an MMA match from the restaurant’s upper balcony, which peers down into the fight ring next door.
I’m no MMA aficionado. Everything I know about the sport comes from Jon Favreau’s guest turn on Friends, but I was taken by the place from my first visit last year. Downstairs, in the combined bar and dining area, it’s a lively scene, with a friendly team that serves up perfectly cooked steak and seafood. On non-fight nights, which are most nights, the restaurant shares an open, family & group-friendly vibe similar to local favorite Oscar’s Brewing Company.

Food & Drink
Chef Ethan Yang of MSG Hospitality Group helped Dan Henderson create the menu. No stranger to the Temecula palate, Chef Yang was the long-time Director of Restaurants at Pechanga Resort Casino and founded Glass Box, a high-end sushi and Asian food restaurant in San Diego. His menu at Hendo’s has a steakhouse bent with a distinctly California point of view. Next to the prime cuts of steak, a list of flatbreads takes up a significant portion of the menu, and there are SoCal staples like chips & guac, an Ahi Tuna Crunch Salad, and L.A.-style Korean BBQ Short Ribs. Of course, there are several burgers, too, including a Wagyu burger with truffle aioli, caramelized onions, and aged white cheddar.

Though we were tempted by the Bourbon Glazed Meatballs and Burrata Jar, my husband and I began our most recent meal at Hendo’s with the Seared Ahi from the “Bites” menu — a recommendation from the floor manager who stopped by to say hello. Dots of wasabi cream topped thin slices of sesame-crusted seared Ahi. This was mouthwatering, sushi-grade fish. The heat of the wasabi was tempered by the cream, and brought some excitement to the straightforward dish.

The skirt steak was simplicity at its finest — expertly cooked medium-rare with a light char, and bursting with flavor, no accompanying sauce was necessary. My husband’s salmon had delicately crisp skin that was enhanced, and not over-sweetened, by the drizzled bourbon maple glaze. It too, was cooked to perfection, flaking at the touch of the fork.
The steak arrived with two equally generously portioned side dishes. We selected the hard-to-stop-eating mac & cheese and Caesar salad. If there was a weak link on our table, it was the slightly underwhelming Caesar with pale romaine and bland croutons. But even that arrived topped with a Parmesan cheese cracker that had a deliciously salty crunch. Know that this miss doesn’t speak to the quality of Hendo’s salad options. On my first visit, I tried the Ahi Tuna Crunchy Salad that had the same excellent seared Ahi as our appetizer and a sesame ginger dressing that burst with umami goodness.

Our cocktails were equally well-crafted. We tried the Smoke Show, a concoction of mezcal, amaretto, pineapple, lime, agave, and bitters, and the Blackberry Buck: a blend of bourbon, blackberries, lemon, ginger beer, syrup, and bitters. Both were bright, well-balanced, and easy-drinking, with the tequila and mezcal come from an agave partner in Jalisco. It will be very exciting to see how the bourbon drinks evolve once the gleaming distiller that sits behind the bar is put to work.

Hendo also has his own beer label, which includes a Mexican Lager, West Coast IPA, and Pale Ale. They are currently brewed off-site, but we were told that the plan is to eventually bring the production in-house. There’s a small, but well-rounded wine list that includes selections from local wineries Peltzer and Doffo.
Hendo’s Barrel House is open Wednesday through Monday for lunch and dinner. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at 11 am. Reservations are available on their website.
